Three men found guilty of murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Newark in 2021.
Three individuals have been convicted of murder in connection with a 2021 shooting that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man in Newark, New Jersey. The convictions were announced by law enforcement officials on Monday. The defendants, Tyshon Armour, 23; Reynold Henderson, 24; and Issad Jackson, 26, were found guilty for their roles in the killing of Dedric Bracey, which took place on March 9, 2021.
The incident reportedly began the day prior when the three men stole a vehicle in Westfield, New Jersey. While driving the stolen car, they encountered Bracey on St. Paul Avenue. According to police reports, the assailants pursued Bracey and subsequently obstructed his path. Armour and Jackson opened fire, discharging a total of 13 rounds at Bracey, who was pronounced dead upon the arrival of emergency responders.
Following the shooting, the trio fled in the stolen vehicle to Irvington. However, they were apprehended the same day by New Jersey State Police. Along with the murder conviction, Armour, Henderson, and Jackson were also found guilty of several firearms-related offenses and charges pertaining to receiving stolen property. They now face the possibility of life imprisonment, with sentencing scheduled for September 9, 2024.
Notably, two of the convicted individuals had been incarcerated prior to this incident but had been released early due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Anthony Ambrose, the then-public safety director of Newark. The exact identities of the two men who were released early were not disclosed.
While awaiting trial, both Jackson and Armour faced additional legal troubles. They were implicated in a violent incident involving the severe beating of another inmate in Essex County Jail. This attack involved the use of a microwave and resulted in Jackson being convicted of third-degree attempted murder, while two accomplices were found guilty of first-degree attempted murder. The victim, Jayshawn Boyd, sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of the assault.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding violent crime and public safety in urban areas, as well as the implications of judicial decisions related to early release during the pandemic. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the shooting and the broader ramifications of criminal behavior among repeat offenders.
