Three people are missing following a large explosion and fire at a plant in Nebraska.

Three individuals are currently unaccounted for following a catastrophic explosion at a wood pellet manufacturing facility in eastern Nebraska. The incident occurred around noon on Tuesday at the Horizon Biofuels plant located in Fremont, approximately 40 miles northwest of Omaha. This facility is known for producing animal bedding and wood pellets intended for use in smokers.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg confirmed that three people were present inside the plant at the time of the explosion. However, firefighting crews faced significant challenges in conducting search and rescue operations due to the intensity of the blaze and the hazardous conditions in the aftermath of the incident. Fire Chief Todd Bernt noted that “heavy smoke and a lot of flames” were obstructing access to the site, complicating efforts to locate the missing individuals.

As emergency personnel responded to the scene, they reported that initial attempts to gain entry were thwarted by the structural collapse of the building and mangled steel that blocked access points. Photos captured immediately after the explosion depict extensive damage, showing the facility’s tall tower partially destroyed and debris scattered across the vicinity.

By 4 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the fire remained active, with Chief Bernt indicating that it was likely to continue smoldering for several days. In response to the explosion, local law enforcement and emergency responders established a three-mile perimeter around the site to secure the area and ensure public safety. Nebraska Task Force One, a specialized urban search and rescue unit, has also been deployed to assist in the ongoing response.

Authorities stated that the cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. As the situation develops, the focus remains on locating the missing individuals while assessing the extent of the damage and ensuring the ongoing safety of the community.
