Toys R Us, a once-prominent player in the American toy retail landscape, is set to make a notable comeback with the opening of over two dozen flagship and holiday pop-up stores across the United States by the end of this year. Following its bankruptcy filing in 2017, which led to the closure of its nearly 800 U.S. locations, the chain is striving to regain its former glory.

Among the new locations are two stores in the Philadelphia area—one at the Deptford Mall in South Jersey and another at the King of Prussia Mall. The company is also enhancing its presence in various Macy’s department stores throughout the region. Historically, Toys R Us was a dominant force in the toy market, holding a 25 percent share of all toys sold in the U.S. in 1990. The brand’s appeal stemmed from a captivating shopping experience, highlighted by the iconic Geoffrey the Giraffe and extensive aisles filled with a diverse range of products, from dolls to bicycles and board games. However, the company was unable to adapt to the increasingly competitive landscape dominated by e-commerce giants like Amazon and retail behemoths such as Walmart, leading to a significant decline in sales and mounting debt.

In March 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy, a move that resonated deeply with nostalgic customers who lamented the loss of a cherished shopping experience. Many shoppers expressed their disappointment at the inability to physically explore and select toys in-store, emphasizing the emotional connection tied to the brand.

Since that time, Toys R Us has attempted several revival strategies under its parent company, WHP Global. These new flagship and holiday stores are viewed as a pivotal step in the brand’s resurgence. The seasonal locations, launched in collaboration with Go!
