Trump deploys troops to Portland and authorizes full force amid unrest in the city.

President Trump announced on Saturday his decision to deploy federal troops to Portland, Oregon, while authorizing the use of “full force” if necessary. This move represents a significant escalation in the administration’s ongoing operations in U.S. cities, which the president has characterized as a response to what he defines as “left-wing terrorism.”

The president relayed this directive through a post on his social media platform, indicating that Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, had requested the intervention. He directed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to mobilize troops to safeguard Portland and various Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities that he claims are facing assaults from groups such as Antifa and other domestic actors labeled as terrorists.

While Trump did not provide specific details regarding the timeline for deployment or the composition of the forces to be utilized, he alluded to previous remarks made in the Oval Office, where he asserted plans for a substantial crackdown on what he referred to as “professional agitators and anarchists.”

Portland, a city with a population of approximately 640,000 and known for its progressive culture, has recently gained national attention due to protests outside an ICE facility opposing Trump’s immigration policies. The already significant federal presence in the city has drawn criticism from local officials, including Mayor Keith Wilson, who described the decision to send federal troops as “disappointing news.” During a press conference on Friday, Wilson reiterated that the city did not request federal intervention and questioned the justification for such actions.

The mayor further stated that the necessary troop presence should be “zero, in Portland and any other American city,” expressing concerns that history would remember acts of oppression. He posited that federal resources could be better utilized if directed toward community support rather than military force.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also responded to the president’s announcement, urging calm and reassured residents that there was no apparent threat to national security in Portland. She indicated that her office had not received any information regarding the rationale or objectives behind the proposed military action.

This latest development follows the president’s previous threats to deploy National Guard troops to cities such as Chicago and Memphis, which he described in stark terms. Earlier in the month, Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., instituting federal oversight over local law enforcement despite statistics indicating a significant reduction in violent crime.

As tensions continue to rise around these federal operations, the response from local leaders and communities remains critical in shaping the discourse surrounding federal intervention in U.S. cities.
