Turkey Finalizes Agreement with the UK for Purchase of 20 Eurofighter Jets

In a significant move to bolster defense capabilities and strengthen bilateral relations, Turkiye and the United Kingdom have finalized an agreement for the purchase of 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets valued at nearly billion. This deal, celebrated by both nations as a strategic partnership, underscores Turkiye’s commitment to enhancing its air defense amid evolving regional dynamics and its ambitious plans to develop its own fifth-generation fighter jets.

Turkiye has solidified an agreement with the United Kingdom to acquire 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets for approximately billion, a strategic decision that reflects Ankara’s commitment to enhancing its air defense capabilities. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Monday, emphasizing the robust partnership between the two nations.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence characterized this transaction as the “biggest fighter jet deal in a generation,” while Erdogan referred to it as a “new symbol of the strategic relations” between two allied nations. Starmer articulated the significance of this agreement for NATO, highlighting how the deal secures vital capabilities along NATO’s southeast flank by reinforcing the alliance’s operational strength in the region.

Under the terms of the agreement, the first batch of Typhoon jets is projected to arrive in Ankara by 2030. This comes after Turkiye and the UK signed a preliminary deal in July for the delivery of 40 jets, which has been greenlit by other members of the Eurofighter consortium, including Germany, Italy, and Spain.

As Turkiye modernizes its military fleet, officials have indicated an ambition to acquire a total of 120 fighter jets, supplementing their defense capabilities while the domestically produced KAAN jets are in development. To further this goal, Turkish defense sources have expressed intentions to procure additional Typhoons from Qatar and Oman to reduce any gaps compared to regional rivals.

In parallel, last year, Turkiye secured a billion agreement with the United States for an order of 40 F-16 jets; however, this procurement is currently facing delays. Furthermore, Erdogan has recently initiated discussions with US President Donald Trump regarding the potential for Turkiye’s reintegration into the F-35 program, which it was excluded from in 2019 due to its acquisition of Russian S-400 missile defense systems.

The prime minister’s inaugural visit to Turkiye coincided with renewed legal challenges against Ekrem Imamoglu, Istanbul’s mayor and Erdogan’s principal political adversary. Turkish prosecutors have charged Imamoglu, imprisoned in March on allegations of corruption, with purported espionage activities, which he strongly denies, asserting that the charges are politically driven. The developments signal a complex interplay between defense agreements and the political landscape within Turkiye.
