Turkiye has announced that it issued arrest warrants for multiple high-ranking Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity in connection with Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The Istanbul prosecutor’s office identified 37 suspects implicated in these allegations, notably including Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and army chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir.
Since the escalation of conflict began in October 2023, Turkiye has consistently condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, which it claims to constitute systematic violations of human rights. The prosecutor’s statement highlighted several distressing events, including the attack on the al-Ahli Baptist Hospital on October 17, 2023, which resulted in 500 deaths, alongside deliberate attacks on medical facilities that further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The blockade imposed on Gaza is also cited, as it has severely limited access to essential humanitarian aid, creating dire conditions for the civilian population.
The announcement emphasizes a specific incident involving the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, a medical facility constructed by Turkiye that was bombed by Israeli forces in March. The conflict has had devastating consequences, with reports indicating that Israeli military actions since October 2023 have resulted in over 68,000 Palestinian deaths and nearly 171,000 injuries, highlighting an urgent need for international dialogue and resolution.
