Two boxers in Japan die from brain injuries sustained during separate matches.

Two Japanese boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, tragically passed away within a day of each other following bouts that took place on the same card at Tokyo’s esteemed Korakuen Hall. The incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding the safety and regulation of boxing as a competitive sport.
On August 2, Shigetoshi Kotari, aged 28, collapsed just after completing a 12-round bout that resulted in a draw against the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) junior lightweight champion, Yamato Hata. Following the fight, Kotari was rushed into emergency surgery to address a subdural hematoma—a serious condition where blood collects between the brain and skull. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, causing widespread grief within the boxing community. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) expressed their condolences on social media, honoring Kotari’s dedication to the sport and his spirit as a fighter.
The very next day, Hiromasa Urakawa, also 28, suffered a fatal injury during a bout against Yoji Saito, where he faced a knockout loss. Efforts to save Urakawa included a craniotomy, but the procedure was not successful. The heartbreaking news of his passing further underscored the need for discussions surrounding athlete safety in boxing. The WBO extended its deepest sympathies to the families and the ower of the Japanese boxing community, echoing the collective sorrow felt after these devastating events.
In response to these tragedies, the Japanese Boxing Commission has announced a significant change: all OPBF title bouts will now be limited to 10 rounds, effective immediately. This decision aims to enhance the safety protocols in the sport and reduce the risk of severe injuries among fighters.
Such incidents echo the broader safety concerns that have affected boxing worldwide, as history shows that fatalities and serious injuries within the ring are not uncommon. Earlier this year, another athlete, Irish boxer John Cooney, tragically passed away following severe complications after a title fight in Belfast.
The boxing community continues to grapple with the implications of these incidents while emphasizing the importance of safety and regulatory practices going forward. As discussions around reform and athlete welfare gain traction, advocates hope that changes initiated now will foster a safer environment for future athletes, benefiting the sport as a whole.
