Two city workers injured in hit-and-run incident while picketing in Port Richmond.

Two city employees, including a pregnant woman, suffered significant injuries during a hit-and-run incident while participating in a picket line in Port Richmond late Thursday night, according to reports from union and police officials. The occurrence took place around 11:30 p.m. at the designated strike location on North Delaware Avenue. Authorities indicated that the workers were seated on chairs at the sidewalk when a Chevrolet Tahoe veered off the road, mounting the curb and colliding with the individuals at the front of the picket line.

The president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council 33, Greg Boulware, stated that the two union members were engaged in peaceful protest in the late hours of the night, advocating for better living conditions and wages for their families when they were “senselessly struck” by the vehicle. The union represents more than 9,000 members who have been on strike since Tuesday, advocating for increased salaries in ongoing negotiations with the administration of Mayor Cherelle L. Parker.

Following the collision, the 41-year-old driver fled the scene. However, police later apprehended the individual on the 2900 block of Castor Avenue, where both the driver and a passenger in the vehicle were taken into custody. Specific details regarding charges have yet to be disclosed as the investigation continues.

As for the victims of the incident, one is a 36-year-old woman who is anticipated to make a recovery. In contrast, a 40-year-old man is currently in critical condition due to sustaining a severe head injury during the accident. The strikers were actively advocating for improved working conditions, underscoring the risks associated with labor actions and the importance of safe protest environments for workers.

This situation has drawn attention to the broader implications of labor disputes and the protective measures that should be in place for individuals engaged in such activities. Authorities will continue to provide updates as they investigate the incident further.
