Three men from New Jersey have become the focus of a police investigation following a brazen break-in at Playland Park in Rye, New York, where significant property damage and theft occurred. One individual, identified as Anthony Conkling, 19, from Wyckoff, New Jersey, has been charged in connection with the incident, while two accomplices, ages 19 and 20, are reportedly still at large but expected to surrender shortly.
The alleged break-in took place just before midnight on September 23, when the suspects reportedly approached the amusement park via a small boat, which sources indicate was appropriated from a boat club in Connecticut. After navigating the waters, they unlawfully entered the park by climbing over a fence and subsequently caused extensive damage to the property.
Upon entering, Conkling and his associates are accused of breaking into an electrical room, where they vandalized vital communication infrastructure by severing or removing phone and internet fiber optic cables. Furthermore, they allegedly collected approximately 200 stuffed animals, stuffing them into garbage bags before removing them from the premises. The individuals also reportedly attempted to throw a photo booth off the boardwalk, potentially adding to the estimated ,000 in damages incurred during their unlawful activities.
Conkling voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement authorities late last week. He faces multiple charges, including third-degree felony burglary and second-degree criminal mischief, as well as additional misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and petit larceny. Following his arraignment in Rye City Court, he was released on his own recognizance, with a subsequent court appearance scheduled for November 25.
The Westchester County Police Department credited public assistance for aiding in the identification of the suspects. They released surveillance images on social media, which attracted considerable attention and engagement from the community, ultimately leading to the swift apprehension of Conkling.
