Two nuclear plants in the Philadelphia area are boosting power generation following an agreement with Google.

In a significant development for the energy sector, two nuclear facilities in the Philadelphia region are poised to enhance their electricity generation capabilities. This change is part of a strategic partnership between Google and Constellation Energy, aimed at meeting the escalating energy demands spurred by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The agreement is valued at approximately .3 billion and is specifically designed to provide cleaner energy solutions to support growing technological needs.

The Limerick Clean Energy Center, situated in Montgomery County, is set to receive a boost of 348 megawatts, increasing its total output capacity to 2,317 megawatts. This enhancement will enable the facility to supply electricity to over 1.7 million homes. Additionally, the Salem Generating Station in South Jersey is expected to gain 97 megawatts, bringing its generating capacity to nearly 995 megawatts, sufficient to power approximately 700,000 homes. Constellation owns 43% of the Salem facility, while the remaining 57% is owned by PSEG.

These capacity upgrades, known in the industry as uprates, are expected to be implemented between 2028 and 2032. They are part of a broader initiative to introduce 890 megawatts of new nuclear energy capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid, which serves 67 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia. The PJM operator has expressed concerns in recent years about its inability to secure sufficient power generation to meet anticipated demand.

Leaders in both companies emphasized the importance of enhancing existing nuclear resources to address the nation’s energy needs while maintaining affordability for consumers. The comprehensive power-purchase agreement will be instrumental in funding necessary upgrades across six nuclear sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Illinois, including improvements to turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems.

This partnership is expected to sustain approximately 4,400 existing jobs while creating an estimated 7,200 construction jobs. Local community leaders have welcomed the development, forecasting considerable employment opportunities from the planned construction efforts. The announcement aligns with ongoing initiatives to promote clean energy and bolster the infrastructure required for data centers, which are critical for modern AI functionalities.

Moreover, this is not the only collaborative effort in the renewable energy landscape, as Constellation recently engaged in a similar agreement with Amazon, underscoring the tech industry’s commitment to powering its operations sustainably. As the demand for AI-driven services continues to rise, partnerships like that of Google and Constellation will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy generation in the United States.
