Two pedestrians were struck in a chain-reaction crash in Queens, resulting in one fatality.

Two women were tragically struck by a vehicle in a chain-reaction incident in Jamaica, Queens, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in one fatality, according to police reports released Sunday. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM on Liberty Avenue near the service road of the Van Wyck Expressway, a key thoroughfare in the area.

At the time of the event, a 58-year-old woman operating a 2008 Toyota Scion was traveling west on Liberty Avenue. She came to a stop in the left-turn lane, allowing the two pedestrians to cross the street safely. However, disaster struck when a 65-year-old driver behind the wheel of a 2021 Mercedes-Benz C 300 struck the Scion from behind, causing a violent chain reaction that sent the Toyota crashing into the two women who were crossing the road.

The police reported that one of the pedestrians, a 51-year-old woman, was tragically pinned underneath the Scion. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived on the scene and transported her to Jamaica Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The authorities have not yet released her name pending notification of her family.

The second victim, a 34-year-old woman, also sustained injuries in the accident but was reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Both drivers involved in the incident remained at the scene and, as of the latest updates, are not facing any charges while the investigation continues. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in urban areas, particularly in relation to the increasing volume of vehicle traffic.

Police data indicates that pedestrian accidents have been a persistent issue in New York City, prompting calls for improved safety measures to protect individuals crossing busy streets. As the investigation into this tragic event unfolds, it underscores the need for ongoing dialogue around road safety and responsibility among drivers.

The community is left in mourning after the events of Saturday, with calls for increased awareness about pedestrian rights and safety measures being echoed in the wake of this unfortunate incident. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
