UFT Teachers Union Supports Zohran Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race

In a significant political development, New York City’s influential teachers’ union has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for the upcoming mayoral election. The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which represents approximately 200,000 members and is the city’s second-largest union, announced its support on Tuesday. Additionally, the endorsement process saw notable interest from other political figures, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who emerged as a significant contender. Although Cuomo remains on the ballot, he has yet to confirm plans to campaign actively. Mulgrew disclosed that a recent internal poll revealed varying levels of support among union members, with retirees predominantly favoring Cuomo while in-service educators leaned towards Mamdani.
