University of Delaware and Delaware State University evacuate campus buildings following received threats.

Delaware State University, the state’s only historically Black college and university (HBCU), evacuated campus buildings and canceled classes after receiving a bomb threat shortly before 11 a.m. University officials announced that the decision to evacuate was made “out of an abundance of caution” and was coordinated with both state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, the University of Delaware, located in Newark, issued an alert at around noon regarding “police activity” on campus. This alert prompted the evacuation of several buildings including Gore Hall, Sharp Lab, and Mitchell Hall. Representatives from the University of Delaware confirmed that these measures were part of a response to a “potential campus safety incident,” but did not disclose specific details concerning the nature of the threat.

In conjunction with these actions, the Newark Police Department announced a traffic alert shortly after noon, alerting the public to the closure of South College Avenue. This section of road was shut down in both directions between Delaware Avenue and Park Place, leading to expected delays for drivers due to the ongoing police response.

As of 12:30 p.m. on the same day, there were no indications of active violence in either incident. Across the broader region, additional bomb threats were reported at Towson and Morgan State universities in Maryland, as noted by the Baltimore Banner. Additionally, Alabama A&M University was also investigating a bomb threat on that day.

Earlier in the month, a series of similar threats directed toward historically Black colleges and universities were reported, many of which are now suspected to have been hoaxes, as indicated in a USA TODAY report from September 12. These threats not only disrupted academic schedules but also contributed to heightened anxiety on campuses.
