Vassar College dormitory evacuated due to bomb hoax in Poughkeepsie.
A bomb threat that emerged on a Friday morning led to the evacuation of Davison House, a residence hall at Vassar College, which accommodates 191 students. College officials declared the threat to be a hoax, and investigations into its origins are currently underway. Vassar College President Elizabeth H. Bradley addressed the incident in a statement issued to the campus community, expressing concerns over the unsettling nature of the threat and affirming a commitment to keep the community informed as more information becomes available.
The incident occurred as new students began to arrive on campus earlier in the week, with residence halls officially reopening for returning students the same day as the evacuation. Classes at Vassar are scheduled to commence on the following Tuesday, marking a significant period of transition for students returning or joining the institution for the first time.
In her statement, President Bradley urged members of the college community to utilize the available wellness resources if they were feeling distressed due to the unexpected evacuation. The college emphasizes mental health support, especially during the beginning of an academic year when students may already be experiencing anxiety due to new environments and social dynamics.
This latest event is part of a troubling trend affecting various educational institutions across the United States as the new academic year approaches. Other universities, including Villanova, Kansas State, and Northern Arizona University, have similarly dealt with false reports of active shooter situations or threats. These incidents highlight the growing prevalence of “swatting” acts—maliciously false reports intended to incite law enforcement response.
An online group known as “Purgatory” has claimed responsibility for several of these hoaxes in recent weeks, alleging they profit from orchestrating such alarming calls to universities and other establishments. Reports indicate that the group charges approximately for specific “swatting” scenarios. Furthermore, they have purported ties to a more sinister network that is suspected of engaging in exploitative activities targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly children.
Educational institutions are working diligently to address these threats and and ensure the safety of their communities while navigating the complexities of a challenging social landscape. As investigations continue, the importance of maintaining safety on campus remains paramount, alongside fostering an environment conducive to learning and personal growth.
