Villanova Group Surprises Students with Birthday Serenades, Gains Viral Attention

On a recent evening at Villanova University, college student Ryan Kennedy experienced an unexpected celebration when he was serenaded by the Villanova Spires, an all-male a cappella group, in honor of his birthday. What started as a casual walk around his residence hall transformed into a lively performance that featured a creative mash-up of traditional birthday songs and contemporary hits, including “Birthday Sex” by Jeremih.

Hired by Kennedy’s football teammates, the Spires delivered a four-minute performance that included popular songs and a humorous twist on classic melodies. This is just one of numerous birthday gigs the group has been performing over the past year, and their efforts are capturing attention both locally and across social media platforms, particularly TikTok. In just over a month, their videos have amassed an impressive 9.3 million views.

Founded in 1961, the Villanova Spires is the university’s oldest a cappella group, with a storied history that includes notable alumni such as the late Jim Croce. Originally focused on folk music, the group has evolved over the years, engaging with various musical styles and even touring internationally. They have recently shifted their focus to performing birthday messages, which has proven to be a hit.

Since November, the Spires have completed more than 150 performances on and off campus, charging per serenade. They often book multiple gigs a night due to overwhelming demand. In one instance, they recorded a video featuring seven birthday performances in a single evening, showcasing their popularity and the efficiency of their organization.

The reactions from recipients of their musical tributes vary widely—some audience members are filled with excitement, singing along, while others may show discomfort, especially when the group performs the more provocative lyrics of “Birthday Sex.” The Spires’ success has even drawn interest from potential Villanova students, with comments on social media suggesting that the viral fame could influence their college choices.

Despite being composed of students majoring in various fields like chemical engineering, biology, and communications, the Spires have established themselves as a notable ensemble in a university that does not offer a dedicated music program. Their active participation in campus life has led to increased recognition among peers and faculty alike.

Their journey from mere performers to a viral sensation reflects a blend of creativity, camaraderie, and a strong sense of community spirit at Villanova University. As they continue to grow in popularity, members of the Spires find their collegiate experience enriched through their shared musical endeavors and friendships.
