Virginia man sentenced to life in prison for murdering New Jersey councilwoman.

A Virginia man has been sentenced to life in prison following his conviction for the murder of Eunice Dwumfour, a councilwoman in New Jersey. Rashid Ali Bynum, aged 31, received the sentence on Monday in Middlesex County court, where he remained silent despite inquiries about his motive for the tragic incident that took place in February 2023.

Bynum was found guilty in June 2025 for the fatal shooting of Dwumfour, who was just 30 years old at the time of her death. The incident occurred outside her residence in Sayreville, New Jersey, where she served as a local council member and was also actively involved as a pastor at Champions Royal Assembly, a church popular within the Nigerian community.

Prior to his relocation to Virginia, Bynum had connections with Dwumfour, having attended her church and previously lived with her and other church members. This background raised further questions about the underlying reasons for his violent actions. During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s daughter poignantly expressed her grief, writing a letter that was read aloud in court. She implored Bynum to reveal his motivations for the shooting, highlighting the kindness and compassion of her mother. Bynum, however, refrained from providing any response to these heartfelt pleas.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors did not establish a clear motive for the murder. Instead, they relied on circumstantial evidence, including toll pass and cellphone data that traced Bynum’s travel from Virginia to New Jersey prior to the shooting. Following the crime, he returned to Virginia. Authorities also linked the 15 bullets fired at the scene to a Glock handgun discovered under Dwumfour’s sister’s bed, reinforcing the severity of the crime.

The lack of clarity surrounding Bynum’s motives has left the family and the community grappling with the tragedy. Eunice Dwumfour’s death has not only impacted her loved ones but has also raised significant concerns about public safety and violence against elected officials. As the case concludes with this sentencing, it serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by those in public service.
