Wegmans recalls nuts in tri-state area over potential salmonella contamination.
Wegmans Food Markets, a prominent grocery store chain, has initiated a voluntary recall of specific varieties of its Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts due to concerns regarding potential salmonella contamination. This precautionary measure affects products sold across the tri-state area, as well as in various other regions.
The recall specifically targets 34 oz. tubs of Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts with a best by date of July 28, 2026, as well as 11.5 oz. plastic bags that are labeled with a best by date of August 10, 2026. The affected nut mix includes a combination of cashews, almonds, pecans, and pistachios.
These products were available for sale between November 3 and December 1 in a variety of locations, including stores in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, along with Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The recall was prompted after a single lot of raw pistachios used in the nut mix tested positive for salmonella during routine quality checks conducted by Wegmans’ food supplier.
In an effort to ensure customer safety, Wegmans has advised individuals who purchased the affected products to return them to any Wegmans store for a full refund. To date, no illnesses related to this recall have been reported, as confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Salmonella is a pathogen that can lead to serious and, in some cases, fatal infections, particularly among vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. For healthy individuals, salmonella infection can result in a range of symptoms, including fever, diarrhea—potentially bloody—nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The FDA further notes that severe cases can escalate to more critical health issues, including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Consumers are urged to remain vigilant about food safety with an emphasis on proper food handling practices to minimize the risk of infection. This recall highlights the importance of routine testing and quality control measures in the food supply chain, which are essential for protecting public health. Customers seeking additional information or guidance can visit the Wegmans website or refer to official communications from the FDA.
For further details on this recall, affected consumers may consult a representative at Wegmans or follow updates from the Food and Drug Administration as the situation develops, reinforcing the commitment to consumer safety in the food industry.
