Wildfires in Turkey Spread to Major Northwest City, Forcing Hundreds to Evacuate

Wildfires continue to ravage various regions in Turkiye, particularly threatening the fourth-largest city, Bursa. Over the past weeks, the infernos have compelled the evacuation of approximately 1,765 residents, as firefighting efforts intensify. Tragically, one firefighter has been confirmed deceased due to a heart attack while engaged in combating the flames.

The blazes surrounding Bursa escalated dramatically overnight, casting a vivid red hue over the city. Since late June, numerous wildfires have emerged throughout the country, prompting the government to declare disaster statuses in the western provinces of Izmir and Bilecik as of the preceding Friday.

Bursa’s governor’s office reported that more than 1,900 firefighters, alongside an additional 500 rescue workers, are currently engaged in an extensive effort to suppress the fires. Authorities have temporarily closed the highway connecting Bursa to Ankara, as surrounding forested areas continue to ignite. Mayor Mustafa Bozbey shared insights that the fires have scorched an estimated 3,000 hectares (approximately 7,413 acres) in the vicinity.

The situation has attracted attention not just locally but on a broader scale, with opposition parliamentarian Orhan Saribal describing the circumstances as resembling an “apocalypse.” The urgency of the response is further underscored by recent records of extreme weather, with Turkiye experiencing its highest recorded temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius (122.9 degrees Fahrenheit) in Sirnak province last Friday, amidst prolonged dry conditions and strong winds.

As fire crews contend with 84 active blazes across the nation, Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli noted that the northwest regions, particularly Karabuk, remain especially vulnerable. Tragically, at least 14 individuals have lost their lives in relation to the wildfires, including 10 dedicated rescue volunteers who perished reentering a blaze in Eskisehir.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced that investigations into the fires in 33 provinces since June 26 have led to legal actions against 97 individuals suspected of involvement.
