Wildwood Boardwalk will not replace tram cars with trucks for the time being.
Spring has ushered in discussions around the future of the iconic tram cars at the Wildwood Boardwalk, igniting both intrigue and nostalgia among locals and visitors alike. Recent social media posts suggested that hybrid trucks might be replacing the traditional yellow and blue tram cars, a rumor that has since caused a stir in the community. However, these claims appear to be overstated.
Last Sunday, a video surfaced on the Wildwood Boardwalk’s unofficial Facebook page, showcasing a yellow Ford Maverick pickup truck, painted to resemble the tram cars. The video’s narrator, identified as Timmy Smith, claimed that the truck would assume towing responsibilities for the tram cars during the summer season. This announcement drew immediate reactions, with some ardent fans expressing concern about losing the nostalgic charm associated with the trams.
In response to the uproar, Patrick Rosenello, the executive director of the Boardwalk Special Improvement District, clarified that there has been no formal decision to replace the tram cars. He indicated that the Ford truck has previously been employed as a service vehicle and is being tested for towing purposes only. The boardwalk plans to assess its effectiveness in this role over the coming summer but has no definitive plans for a broader transition at this time.
The tram cars, which have been transporting passengers since their introduction at the 1939 World’s Fair, still utilize technology and components from that era. With some parts dating back several decades, acquiring replacements has proven financially impractical. Rosenello mentioned that last year, estimates for constructing new towing vehicles reached over 0,000 each, and their battery-powered alternatives would not align with the operational requirements of the tram system.
Amid these discussions, it’s important to note that a lawsuit has recently surfaced concerning the tram cars’ signature announcement, “Watch the tram car, please.” Floss Stingel, the voice behind the phrase, has taken legal action against the City of Wildwood, claiming she has not received compensation for her work. The lawsuit remains ongoing, with further developments yet to unfold.
As the tram cars prepare to commence their 77th season this Saturday, they remain a cherished symbol of the Wildwood experience. Ticketing and schedule information are available through the Downtown Wildwoods’ official website. The future of the tram cars, however, rests on a balance of sentimentality and practicality as the boardwalk navigates its evolving role in the community.
