Woman arrested for leaving newborn daughter on subway platform at Penn Station in New York City.

A woman was apprehended for allegedly abandoning her newborn daughter on a busy subway platform in Penn Station, Midtown Manhattan, according to local law enforcement sources. Assa Diawara, aged 30, was taken into custody late on Tuesday after police connected her to the incident that occurred around 9 a.m. on a Monday morning.

The newborn was discovered left alone at the bottom of a staircase leading to the downtown platform of the No. 1 train at 34th Street. Investigative efforts included a review of surveillance footage, which captured Diawara entering Penn Station while carrying the baby, wrapped snugly in a blanket, in her arms. Subsequently, the video showed her leaving the station without the child.

Following her departure, Diawara was recorded taking a Cadillac livery cab to Jamaica, Queens, where she was dropped off. Police canvassed the area and a neighbor, recognizing her from the surveillance images, provided information that led authorities to her residence.

During police questioning, Diawara reportedly confessed to abandoning her daughter at the subway station. As a result, she faces charges of child abandonment and child endangerment. She is currently awaiting arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.

At the time of the incident, the newborn was still connected by her umbilical cord. Medics who responded to the scene took the infant to Bellevue Hospital, where she underwent evaluation and was reported to be in good health. The discovery of the abandoned child prompted commuters to alert authorities, who quickly initiated an investigation.

Upon identifying Diawara through surveillance footage, police released images of her to the public in hopes of gathering additional information regarding the case. The visuals depicted Diawara in a red headscarf, pink pants, glasses, and a multi-colored top, which appeared to be a hospital gown, as she navigated the busy train station with the baby.

This incident sheds light on the complexities surrounding maternal distress and challenges that individuals may face in urban environments. The authorities continue to emphasize public safety while addressing the emotional and social factors that can contribute to such tragic circumstances. Further developments in this case are expected to unfold as the legal proceedings commence.
