Woman attacks Bronx MTA bus driver with unknown substance in recent incident targeting transit workers.

A woman is currently being sought by law enforcement for her involvement in the assault of a 33-year-old Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus driver in the Norwood neighborhood of The Bronx. This incident, which took place on May 19 around 8:40 a.m., marks the fourth reported attack on New York City transit workers within the month of May.

According to police reports, the assailant approached the driver while she was stationed inside a BX10 bus on Bainbridge Avenue and Van Cortlandt Avenue East and sprayed an unknown substance directly into her face. The victim was subsequently transported to Montefiore Medical Center, where she is reported to be in stable condition. The attacker was described as wearing dark clothing, along with a dark baseball cap featuring an LA Dodgers logo, and carrying a backpack.

This incident follows a troubling trend of violence against transit workers in New York City, highlighting mounting concerns over the safety of personnel tasked with public transportation. On May 13, a 71-year-old MTA driver in Brooklyn was struck in the head with a wrench during a confrontation with a passenger. This altercation occurred as the driver was operating his B61 bus near the intersection of Lorraine and Hicks Streets in Red Hook. Investigations indicate that the assailant was likely summoned onto the bus by another passenger already involved in a dispute with the driver. Following the attack, the assailant fled the scene and is currently being sought by authorities.

In another incident on May 23, an MTA subway conductor was punched in the face while checking for passengers at the Grand Central-42nd Street station. This unprovoked attack occurred shortly after the conductor’s train had arrived. The perpetrator ran from the scene and remains at large, further emphasizing the urgent need for increased safety measures within the transit system.

Moreover, on May 29, a 68-year-old MTA cleaner faced aggression from an individual wielding a pipe at the Bergen Street subway station in Boerum Hill. During an encounter that escalated into a physical struggle, the cleaner sustained injuries but was treated and released from NYU Langone Health-Cobble Hill.

In light of these recent assaults, transit authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding these incidents. Individuals with knowledge of these events are encouraged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, where all calls will remain confidential.

The alarming frequency of attacks against transit workers has sparked discussions about the need for improved safety measures and greater support for those dedicated to public transportation in New York City.
