Woman seeking divorce reportedly expressed concerns about husband’s potential violence before being found dead shortly after.

In a tragic incident that took place on August 1, Laura Smith, a 49-year-old woman residing in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, lost her life in a domestic dispute with her husband, Brian T. Smith, a 60-year-old former California Highway Patrol officer. The couple, married for three decades, reportedly engaged in a heated argument over Laura’s decision to seek a divorce.

Laura Smith had confided in her sister, Jean Gwaltney, prior to the confrontation. She expressed her distress over the longstanding abuse and her intent to leave the marriage, planning to take their adult son Matthew, 24, with her. Minutes before the tragic event, Laura told her sister that if anything were to happen to her, she wanted her children to know they were her everything, emphasizing her deep love for them. Just twenty minutes later, the situation escalated fatally.

According to Lake Havasu City police, Matthew intervened during the argument, attempting to de-escalate tensions. However, the encounter took a deadly turn as Brian Smith retrieved a shotgun from another room and shot Laura multiple times, before turning the weapon on himself. This devastating event has left two additional children—Steven, 30, and Taylor, 28—grieving the loss of both their parents. Steven is Brian’s son from a previous relationship, while Taylor is Laura’s daughter from her former marriage.

Laura Smith was once employed as a dental assistant, but primarily dedicated her life to raising her children. Her sister described her as a caring and intelligent individual who found joy in her family and hobbies, such as fishing in Lake Havasu and attending off-road dune races in Imperial County. Brian Smith, well recognized in the Inland Empire for his long tenure with the California Highway Patrol, exhibited a history of anger and abusive behavior according to Gwaltney. She noted that he had often resisted mental health support, concealing his struggles from the public eye.

Following this tragedy, there are significant concerns regarding the financial aftermath for the surviving children. There was no life insurance, survivor benefits, will, or trust to assist them during this difficult time. Gwaltney has since initiated a fundraiser to support her nephews and niece, aiming to highlight the extraordinary life of her sister and the sacrifices she made for her family.
