A 33-year-old man from Philadelphia is now a key figure in an ongoing criminal investigation following a violent incident at a beauty salon in West Oak Lane on Monday afternoon. Authorities are actively seeking Jamal Pistoria, who is wanted for murder and a series of related crimes after he allegedly assaulted three women, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to the others.
The incident took place at approximately 2 p.m. at ABBA Blessed Beauty Salon located on the 6300 block of Stenton Avenue. Eyewitness reports indicate that Pistoria entered the salon and forced three women into a secluded area. During the assault, he shot 34-year-old Ofelia Bellaniri Hernandez Camill in the head as she attempted to defend herself. Despite immediate medical attention, Hernandez Camill succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital.
In the chaos that ensued, Pistoria reportedly pistol-whipped two other women aged 33 and 44, and sexually assaulted one of them before fleeing the scene. Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore described the incident as horrifying and noted that it remains unclear what motivated Pistoria’s actions.
Investigators have indicated that Pistoria did not seem to have any prior acquaintance with the victims. It appears that he left the salon after stealing a minimal amount of money, which further raises questions about his motives. Police are currently focusing their search efforts in the West Oak Lane area, particularly around the 1500 block of Tulpehocken Street, where Pistoria is believed to be at large.
Prosecutors have indicated that Pistoria will face multiple charges, including murder, sexual assault, indecent assault, attempted murder, robbery, and more. This disturbing event not only left the salon reeling but also impacted the surrounding community, which includes a blend of businesses close to Washington Lane.
A representative from the salon expressed sadness over the loss of Hernandez Camill, describing her as a warm and loving colleague. The business community has come together, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to assist with funeral expenses for Hernandez Camill. The owner of the salon, Arisleidy Pérez Gil, also sustained serious injuries and will require surgery.
Hernandez Camill is originally from the Morningside Heights section of New York City, and her family has not yet been reached for comments regarding this tragic incident. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this unprecedented act of violence.
As the investigation progresses, authorities urge anyone with information regarding Pistoria’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in bringing him to justice.
