Man faces charges for fatal stabbing and multiple car thefts in Chester County on Sunday night.
A 33-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following a violent incident that led to the death of a 69-year-old man in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that Javier Rivera faces multiple charges related to a series of crimes, including the fatal stabbing of Charles Maston during an attempted carjacking.
Rivera was apprehended early on Monday at his residence in Kennett Square. Authorities discovered one of the stolen vehicles associated with the incidents parked outside his home. According to the police criminal complaint, the sequence of events unfolded on Sunday night when Rivera attempted to steal a white BMW SUV parked in the driveway of a home on Crestline Drive. During the theft attempt, Maston confronted Rivera, leading to a physical altercation in which Rivera is accused of fatally stabbing him before fleeing the scene.
Responding officers quickly identified an abandoned red Chevrolet SUV registered to Rivera, located on the 400 block of North Union Drive. Witnesses nearby reported seeing a man fitting Rivera’s description attempting to enter another vehicle, a maroon SUV, shortly after the stabbing incident.
The situation escalated further when Pennsylvania State Police received reports of a stolen gray Honda Accord. The owner of that vehicle indicated she was struck by a burgundy Honda Accord that had just been reported stolen from North Union Street, linking Rivera to yet another theft.
In a subsequent police investigation at a residence on South New Street in West Chester, another witness described a man resembling Rivera making aggressive gestures as he tried to enter a home. This encounter was also captured on security footage, showing a gray Honda Accord parked nearby.
Police finally located Rivera at his home, where he was found wearing clothing consistent with witness descriptions. His shirt and shoes appeared to be stained with dried blood, and he had a laceration on his right palm, further implicating him in these violent occurrences.
The Chester County District Attorney’s office emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the impact of the violence in what is typically a quiet community. Law enforcement agencies collaborated swiftly to capture Rivera, potentially preventing further harm to residents in the area. As Rivera remains in custody without bail, the case underscores ongoing concerns about violent crime in the region.
