Police in three states seek driver with rifle and body armor after hitting a state trooper.

Police agencies across three states are currently engaged in a manhunt for a suspect believed to be armed with a rifle and wearing body armor after he struck a Massachusetts State Trooper and fled into Connecticut during a high-speed pursuit. The incident unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, August 20, 2025, around 10 p.m., when Massachusetts State Police attempted to pull over a black Audi with temporary Vermont registration on Interstate 91, near Holyoke, Massachusetts.

The situation escalated when law enforcement had already been alerted to a possible domestic assault involving a weapon in Dover, Vermont. Officers had been dispatched to investigate the incident when the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Mason L. Payne, fled the scene prior to their arrival.

During the attempted traffic stop later that night, Payne reportedly fled the scene, dragging one of the officers several feet in the process. Fortunately, the trooper sustained no serious injuries. A high-speed pursuit ensued, with the suspect reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Despite efforts to employ stop sticks to halt the vehicle, Massachusetts State Police decided to terminate the chase when it neared a road work crew due to safety concerns.

Following the termination of the pursuit, it is believed that the suspect crossed into Connecticut. The Shelton Police Department is focusing their efforts in New Haven County and Fairfield County, alerting the public that Payne is considered armed and dangerous, with threats made against law enforcement officials. Authorities have urged anyone who may encounter Payne or the suspect vehicle to refrain from approaching and to contact emergency services immediately.

In response to the escalating situation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined local law enforcement in the search efforts across Connecticut. The authorities are actively working to apprehend Payne and ensure public safety as the investigation continues.

As this situation develops, police agencies across Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut remain vigilant. The joint efforts exemplify interagency cooperation in addressing potential threats, with public safety being a primary concern. Citizens are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and report any sightings of the suspect or his vehicle to authorities.
