Off-duty New Jersey officers intervene in domestic dispute, leading to chaos and confusion at the scene.

A New Jersey man faces multiple charges following a violent encounter on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, where he allegedly assaulted his wife and engaged in a physical altercation with off-duty police officers attempting to intervene. The incident, which took place on Sunday morning, escalated quickly, drawing the attention of law enforcement personnel who were off duty at the time.

According to police reports, Lieutenant James Herbert was participating in the Seedorf/McMeekin Memorial 5K Run when he observed a critical situation on the beach. He saw a man, identified as 27-year-old Xontae Glass, holding a woman in a headlock and attempting to pull her under the boardwalk. Upon witnessing the event, Lieutenant Herbert instructed another runner to call 911 and approached the couple to offer assistance while waiting for additional officers to arrive.

As Lieutenant Herbert intervened, Glass allegedly produced a pocket knife and threatened him with the weapon. This prompted a physical confrontation between the two men, which included punches being exchanged. Witnesses recorded the altercation, detailing the chaos that unfolded in broad daylight.

During the unfolding struggle, Captain Scott Pollak, an off-duty officer from the Northfield Police Department, was also present. He drew his weapon and issued verbal commands to Glass, who subsequently dropped the knife and fled the scene. Witnesses assisted the officers by identifying Glass’s whereabouts as he tried to evade capture.

The woman involved in the altercation, Michelle Hawthorne, expressed her discontent with how the situation was handled. She characterized what was perceived as a violent confrontation as a typical domestic dispute. Hawthorne asserted that neither responding officer identified themselves as a police officer and claimed that Glass’s actions with the knife were in self-defense.

Upon the arrival of on-duty officers, Glass was apprehended but reportedly became combative during transportation to the police station, leading to injuries sustained by Officer Aaron McKim. Following the incident, Glass was charged with simple assault, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He has since been remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

A detention hearing for Glass is scheduled for the upcoming Friday, where further legal proceedings will take place to address the charges against him. The Atlantic City Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident and encourages anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with their inquiries. The case underscores the complexities surrounding domestic disputes and the critical role of law enforcement in escalating situations.
