A box truck driver has been apprehended following a tragic hit-and-run incident on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), which resulted in the death of an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer. Authorities reported on Thursday that Carlos Almanzar Toribio, 30, was arrested late Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused death.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m. near the Atlantic Avenue exit in Cobble Hill, where Almanzar Toribio was operating a 2020 Freightliner box truck. He collided with the officer, who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle. Tragically, the officer, a four-year veteran of the NYPD working in the 84th Precinct in downtown Brooklyn, was thrown from his motorcycle. The vehicle continued down the highway, ultimately crashing into a wall and igniting in flames, as seen in videos circulated on social media.
Alongside the charge of leaving the scene of the fatal accident, Almanzar Toribio is also facing charges related to operating an unregistered vehicle and driving without a license plate. It remains unclear whether he was aware that a collision had occurred.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported the officer to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The identity of the officer has not yet been disclosed.
