Train 613 was en route to Penn Station when it struck a door that had reportedly detached from an Amtrak locomotive while navigating through Tube No. 4. Following the incident, the train continued its journey to Penn Station, but the tunnel was temporarily closed for inspection, leading to operational challenges for numerous LIRR services.
According to an Amtrak spokesperson, the affected track was restored to operational status by 9:10 a.m., following thorough inspections by both MTA and Amtrak crews. However, it remains unclear how many LIRR trains were rerouted or delayed due to this unexpected closure.
The incident occurs in the wake of ongoing major repair work on the East River Tunnel, a crucial transportation artery that has served the region for over a century.
