Gaza City Residents Evacuate Due to Intensified Israeli Airstrikes

In recent developments, a significant escalation of violence has occurred in Gaza, exemplified by the bombardment of the Al-Ghafri high-rise, which is the tallest residential building in the region. The airstrikes, initiated by Israeli forces on Monday evening, have compelled hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate Gaza City, which is recognized as the largest urban area within the enclave.
Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, has raised concerns regarding the use of unconventional military tactics purportedly aimed at displacing Palestinian residents from this historical center. Reports from Israeli media indicate that these strikes have been particularly concentrated in the northern and western sections of Gaza City, with Palestinian Civil Defence stating that over 50 multi-storey buildings have been destroyed in recent weeks alone.
In neighborhoods such as Zeitoun, the impact of the bombings has been devastating, with more than 1,500 homes reduced to rubble since early August. Reports from Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz highlight a campaign to dismantle what he describes as terror infrastructures, though no substantiated evidence has been provided to support claims that civilian buildings were being used for military purposes.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported the tragic loss of 51 Palestinians, including young children, within a 24-hour period, underscoring the severe toll inflicted upon civilians during this prolonged conflict. The loss extends to the media sector, with three journalists recently killed in separate incidents. This grim statistic highlights the increasing dangers faced by journalists in the region, bringing the total number of media workers killed in Gaza since the onset of hostilities to nearly 280, a stark indicator of the current climate for press freedom.
The ongoing violence has continued unabated, with Israel’s security cabinet previously approving a strategy aimed at the strategic seizure of Gaza City. This decision has led to heightened attacks, causing further displacement and forcing residents southward to areas such as al-Mawasi. Despite being designated as a “safe zone,” those who have relocated still find themselves vulnerable to bombardments, while lacking essential supplies such as water, food, and medical services.
New reports indicate that there is a deepening humanitarian crisis, with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification declaring a famine in northern Gaza. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that only a fraction of coordinated humanitarian missions have been authorized, exacerbating the dire needs of affected populations.
Albanese has called for accountability, urging the international community to demand compliance with humanitarian law and hold accountable those responsible for these ongoing atrocities. Her assertions emphasize the critical need for global action to protect the rights of civilians and promote peace in the region.
