Metro-North introduces super-express trains on the Hudson Line for faster commuter service.
Hudson Valley residents commuting to New York City will soon experience a significant reduction in travel time, as Metro-North is set to introduce “superexpress” train services on the Hudson Line next month. Beginning on October 6, the updated schedule will see six trains operating daily between Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County and Grand Central Terminal, accomplishing the journey in approximately 90 minutes. This represents a time savings of five to seven minutes compared to the current travel times.
These enhancements follow a series of schedule optimizations and improvements to the signaling systems in the Yonkers area, which have been implemented to facilitate faster service. According to Governor Kathy Hochul, this development will save daily commuters up to 14 minutes per trip, accumulating to an impressive 70 minutes over a standard workweek.
The new timetable will feature three superexpress trains departing Poughkeepsie during the weekday mornings at 6:08 a.m., 6:44 a.m., and 7:05 a.m. In the evening, three trains will return to Poughkeepsie, leaving Grand Central Terminal at 5:09 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 6:12 p.m. En route, these trains will stop at Harlem-125th Street, Beacon, and New Hamburg.
Metro-North President Justin Vonashek emphasized the efficiency of this new service, noting that these recorded travel times mark some of the fastest in the history of the Metro-North rail system. The introduction of these superexpress trains is part of a broader initiative that began earlier this year on the New Haven Line, which already features six express trains traveling between New Haven and New York City in similar time frames.
Moreover, the announcement aligns with Climate Week NYC, as Metro-North continues to enhance its environmental sustainability efforts. The railroad is also introducing two new dual-mode locomotives capable of operating on both electrified and nonelectrified tracks. By the end of 2028, a total of 33 of these locomotives will be in service, improving the fleet’s efficiency and reducing airborne pollutants by 85% compared to the existing locomotives.
This initiative not only aims to improve the commuting experience for Hudson Valley residents but also reinforces Metro-North’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. It represents a significant leap forward in the ongoing effort to modernize public transit systems while meeting the growing demand for efficient, eco-friendly travel options in the New York metropolitan area.
