A 12-year-old girl dies while subway surfing with a teenage friend who sneaked out of home, according to her grieving father.
A tragic incident on Saturday evening claimed the life of 12-year-old Zemfira Mukhtarov, who, along with a 13-year-old friend, was killed while subway surfing on a J train in Brooklyn. Zemfira was reportedly supposed to bake brownies with her father, Ruslan Mukhtarov, but instead left their home in Bay Ridge to engage in the dangerous activity. Her father lamented the loss of an upcoming bonding opportunity, highlighting the innocence and creativity of his daughter, who had aspired to sell her baked goods at a local market.
Zemfira, who was only a few weeks away from her 13th birthday, is among the youngest victims of subway surfing incidents in New York City. Such dangerous trends have gained increasing attention due to their prevalence among young individuals, often fueled by social media influences. This growing trend has prompted a wave of concern among parents and law enforcement regarding the safety of youth in urban environments.
In light of this tragedy, Ruslan Mukhtarov shared that while his daughter made an unfortunate decision, systemic factors also contributed to her death. There have been previous incidents; for instance, in September of the past year, 11-year-old Cayden Thompson lost his life while subway surfing, an event also attributed by his family to social media’s allure.
The circumstances of Zemfira’s death unfolded when the two girls were found lying on top of the last car of the J train after it arrived at the Marcy Avenue subway station at approximately 3:10 a.m. Witnesses reported that both girls suffered severe head injuries in the incident. A fellow subway surfer, who was with them during the event, placed the 911 call.
In the wake of the tragedy, Mukhtarov emphasized the importance of parents cherishing time with their children and fostering open communication. He expressed regret for the challenges of immigrant life that may have taken away time with Zemfira, although he acknowledged that external factors beyond their control also played a significant role in this situation.
