Former Central Bucks superintendent facing termination now appointed to lead a Philadelphia charter school.

Steven Yanni, the former superintendent of the Central Bucks School District, has officially stepped down from his position amidst ongoing allegations regarding the mishandling of child abuse reports. These charges implicated Yanni and several other district administrators in relation to incidents involving students with disabilities at Jamison Elementary School. Following these events, Yanni has accepted a new role as the Chief Executive Officer of Northwood Academy, a K-8 charter school located in the Frankford area of Philadelphia.

The allegations against Yanni and his administrative team centered around claims that they improperly addressed reports of abuse involving a teacher and an educational assistant within an autistic support classroom at Jamison Elementary. According to findings from Disability Rights Pennsylvania, students in this classroom endured illegal restraint techniques that posed a “reasonable likelihood of bodily injury” and may have interfered with their breathing. These disturbing allegations raised significant concerns regarding the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable students within the district.

During an August termination hearing, Yanni and Jamison Elementary’s principal, David Heineman, defended their actions. Yanni maintained that his decisions were based on advice and information provided by other staff members and legal advisors. He expressed his belief that the Central Bucks School Board was attempting to scapegoat him for the situation, asserting that he had never deceived parents, the board, or authorities.

As of now, the Central Bucks School Board had not taken definitive action regarding Yanni’s termination prior to his resignation. Northwood Academy, which serves approximately 450 students, is situated on Castor Avenue and is noted for its academic focus and community involvement.

In a message to the Northwood community dated October 6, Yanni expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the charter school. He emphasized that he was attracted not only by Northwood’s academic reputation but also by the community spirit characterized by care and dedication among its students, staff, and families.
