Man sentenced to 25 years to life for fatal shooting of woman at Brooklyn construction site.

In a tragic case highlighting the impact of gun violence, a 34-year-old man has received a sentence of 25 years to life for the fatal shooting of a 53-year-old construction worker in Brooklyn. Malik Fryar was found guilty of second-degree murder after a jury trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court, in connection with the senseless death of Dorothy Dixon, a devoted mother and grandmother who was working at a construction site on February 4, 2019. Prosecutors presented evidence that Fryar had a history of disputes with workers at the site, having previously threatened them just a week prior to the shooting.

On the day of the incident, Fryar, who was looking for work, returned to the job site in Coney Island where Dixon and her fellow laborers, part of the coalition Black Economic Survival, were present. Initially, Fryar was confronted by one of the workers, leading him to leave the scene. However, after a brief period, Fryar returned to the site in his vehicle, armed. After retrieving a firearm from his trunk, he fired three shots into the crowd, tragically striking Dixon in the chest and critically wounding another worker.

Dixon’s unexpected death devastated her family. She had just spoken to her daughter, sharing plans to prepare a meal for her ailing granddaughter, who was only seven years old at the time. Dixon’s daughter expressed her grief, emphasizing that her mother did not deserve such a fate and highlighting the long wait for justice in a painful six-year journey since the event.

Authorities reported that Fryar fled the scene shortly after the shooting, abandoning his vehicle, which was later discovered approximately five miles away in Brighton Beach. After a five-month manhunt, he was apprehended while trying to evade capture in an air conditioning duct in a Lower East Side apartment.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez commented on the case, condemning the violence and its devastating effects on innocent lives. Gonzalez emphasized the ongoing commitment to reduce gun violence in Brooklyn and hold offenders accountable for their actions. Fryar’s lengthy criminal history, which dates back to at least 2012, includes previous convictions for drug offenses and attempted assault, casting a long shadow over this tragic incident.
