Man charged with robbing 99-year-old landlord, who later died from a stroke, extradited to New York City for prosecution.

A 39-year-old man, Domingo Vasquez Rodriguez, accused of robbing a 99-year-old landlord at gunpoint, was extradited from Philadelphia to New York on Friday to face charges. The incident, which occurred at a Washington Heights apartment building managed by the victim, Jose Antonio Tur, resulted in significant repercussions for the elderly landlord, who suffered a stroke the day after the robbery and subsequently died on October 8.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has formally charged Vasquez Rodriguez with multiple offenses, including robbery, burglary, assault, and grand larceny. His apprehension occurred on September 27, five days after the alleged robbery in which he reportedly stole ,000 from Tur, a long-time figure in the community who had managed the building for decades.

Court documents reveal that Vasquez Rodriguez had previously resided in the building and owed Tur approximately ,000 in unpaid rent. In an attempt to resolve the financial dispute, Tur had offered him ,000 to vacate the premises, an offer that Vasquez Rodriguez accepted before relocating to Philadelphia in August. However, upon his return to New York in September, he contacted Tur’s grandson, asserting he was owed additional money. This led to the reported robbery just days later, according to prosecutors.

The events unfolded in a particularly distressing manner. Investigators believe Vasquez Rodriguez used deception to lure Tur to the building under the pretense of receiving a package. Once there, he allegedly ambushed Tur with a gun, forcing him into the building while threatening him physically. Surveillance footage corroborates these claims, showing the suspect holding a firearm against Tur’s back as they moved through the premises. After stealing a significant sum from Tur’s office, Vasquez Rodriguez fled back to Philadelphia.

Following the assault, Tur was treated for injuries, including two broken fingers and a cut requiring stitches, injuries sustained during the confrontation. The impact of the robbery was compounded by the stroke Tur suffered shortly afterward, which ultimately led to his death more than two weeks later.

The community mourns the loss of Jose Antonio Tur, who was described as a beloved figure by family and friends. His grandson has expressed dismay over the circumstances surrounding Tur’s death and raised concerns about a perceived lack of respect and accountability in society. Vasquez Rodriguez’s arraignment is expected to occur in Manhattan Criminal Court in the coming days, as the case progresses through the judicial system.
