Five family members, including three children, die in house fire in New Jersey on Halloween.
A devastating house fire in Paterson, New Jersey, claimed the lives of five family members, including three children, on Halloween night. This tragic incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday at a residence located at 15 Emerson Street. Emergency responders from the Paterson Fire Department were dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls indicated that individuals were trapped on the upper floor of the burning structure.
Firefighters from Engine 2 arrived just four minutes after the initial report, finding a small wood-frame home fully engulfed in flames. Despite their quick response and determined efforts to combat the blaze, which was exacerbated by strong winds, the firefighters were unable to rescue the occupants inside. Frank Lozada, president of the Paterson Firefighters Association, noted that the firefighters faced extremely challenging conditions while trying to save those trapped within the house.
After an aggressive assault on the flames, crews located the five victims on the second level of the one-and-a-half-story structure. They were later identified by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office as a 39-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, and their children, aged 14, 12, and 7. Neighbors described the family as good and friendly people, underscoring the deep impact this tragedy has had on the local community.
In the aftermath of the incident, two firefighters sustained injuries and were transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. The current condition of these responders was not disclosed by officials.
Lozada expressed that the fire serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of functioning smoke detectors, fire safety awareness, and community support for emergency services. He characterized the event as a “heartbreaking tragedy” that affects not just the victims’ family but resonates deeply within the entire Paterson community.
Authorities have commenced an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire, as they work to gather further information about this catastrophic event. The loss of five lives in such a sudden and tragic manner has sent shockwaves throughout the area, prompting renewed discussions regarding fire preparedness and safety measures within homes.
