FDNY extinguishes 4-alarm fire in Bronx building; 73-year-old woman found dead.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 73-year-old woman discovered in her Bronx apartment as firefighters responded to a significant four-alarm fire that broke out on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred in a residential building located on Sheridan Avenue near East 172nd Street in the Concourse neighborhood of the Bronx.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze shortly after 3 p.m. and arrived to find smoke billowing from the building. The fire originated on the sixth floor and quickly spread into the area between the ceiling and the roof, causing damage to two apartments. However, the apartment in which the deceased woman was found reportedly did not sustain any fire damage, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Joseph Duggan.
While examining the scene, officials noted that there were no visible signs of trauma on the woman’s body. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy to establish the cause of death. At this time, the woman’s identity has not been publicly released, and authorities have not determined how long she had been deceased prior to the discovery of her body. Chief Duggan indicated that her death appears to be a separate incident and is currently classified as unrelated to the fire.
During the firefighting response, a total of nine individuals required medical attention due to minor injuries, which mainly resulted from smoke inhalation. Among the injured were three firefighters and four police officers, all of whom were treated at local hospitals. Reports indicate that two residents who experienced minor injuries declined medical assistance.
Approximately 170 firefighters and emergency medical service personnel were deployed to the scene, and they managed to bring the fire under control within a span of three hours. Fire Marshals from the FDNY are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, seeking to determine what ignited the flames that led to this emergency situation.
As investigations continue, the community remains anxious for further details regarding the fire and the tragic death of the woman. Local authorities are working diligently to provide clarity to the situation and ensure the safety of residents in the area.
