Long Island man charged with attacking girlfriend using sulfuric acid.

A 42-year-old resident of Long Island has been formally indicted for allegedly committing a serious assault against his girlfriend by throwing sulfuric acid at her during a domestic dispute. The incident, which took place in November, has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the victim.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney has described the actions of Douglas Graves as exhibiting “unimaginable” cruelty. According to reports from the District Attorney’s office, Graves, during a confrontation with the victim as she attempted to leave their residence in Wyandanch, picked up a container labeled as a Clorox bleach bottle. Investigators assert that this bottle contained sulfuric acid, which Graves used to intentionally splash on the victim’s face and body.

Upon their arrival at the scene, police found the victim in distress, with her clothing reportedly melting away from her skin due to the corrosive substance. The rapid and damaging effects of the sulfuric acid resulted in severe burns, necessitating immediate medical attention. She was transported to Nassau County Medical Center, where she underwent treatment for the chemical burns that continued to deteriorate for several days, requiring ongoing medical interventions including reconstructive surgery.

The indictment against Graves includes two counts of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon. Additionally, he faces charges of criminal contempt as he allegedly attempted to contact the victim while she was hospitalized, violating a protective order. Prosecutors claim he reached out not only to her but also to two other women in efforts to obstruct the victim from providing testimony against him.

In a statement concerning the case, District Attorney Tierney emphasized the importance of supporting survivors of domestic violence, asserting that the legal system will ensure accountability for those who inflict harm upon their partners. The pressing issues of domestic violence and the dangers posed by chemical weapons in intimate settings have become increasingly focal points in discussions surrounding public safety and justice.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the necessity for stringent legal measures to protect victims. The indictment is a critical step toward holding perpetrators accountable and underscores the commitment of local authorities to combat domestic abuse in all its forms.
