Suspect in Brown University mass shooting taken into custody.

A person of interest in the recent mass shooting at Brown University has been arrested, according to authorities on Sunday morning. The tragic incident occurred on campus, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring nine others. Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest took place at a Hampton Inn in Coventry, Rhode Island, located approximately 15 miles from Brown University’s Providence campus. The suspect, who is in their 20s, has not yet been publicly identified.

Details surrounding the shooting indicate that it began shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, inside the Barus & Holley building, a facility that hosts both the engineering school and the physics department. At the time of the shooting, a review session for final exams was taking place in the targeted classroom. Eyewitnesses reported chaos as shots rang out, prompting immediate responses from campus security and local police.

Authorities revealed that the shooter had been recorded on surveillance footage walking calmly away from the scene shortly after the incident, dressed in dark clothing. Following the shooting, a shelter-in-place order was enacted for Brown University and neighborhoods in proximity to the school, which was subsequently lifted after the arrest.

The victims, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, were confirmed to be students at the university. During a press conference, Brown University President Christina Paxson expressed the pain and shock that has gripped the community, stating that they have a long recovery ahead.

In a coordinated effort, FBI agents were able to locate the suspect using cell phone geolocation data, acting on information provided by the Providence Police Department. Authorities recovered at least two 30-round magazines at the scene but have not yet located the firearm used in the shooting.

In light of these events, Brown University has suspended all remaining classes, exams, and assignments for the semester, which was originally scheduled to conclude on December 20. The university has advised students to return home.

This shooting in Providence coincided with another tragic event occurring globally, as 11 individuals lost their lives and at least 29 others were injured in a terror attack during Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. As communities grapple with the aftermath of such violence, the need for continued dialogue and preventative measures remains paramount.
