Three Officers Shot in Rochester While Responding to Break-In Attempt at Ex-Girlfriend’s Home
In Rochester, New York, a violent encounter unfolded on Friday night, resulting in the wounding of three police officers and the death of a suspect. Law enforcement officials reported that the incident was sparked by an attempted break-in at the residence of the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Emergency services received a call around 10:15 p.m. on Friday regarding the situation occurring on the 600 block of Chili Avenue.
The 911 caller alerted authorities to the identity of the suspect, indicating that he was armed and possessed a pistol permit. Upon their arrival at the scene, officers from the Rochester Police Department’s Genesee section discovered the suspect outside the home. As they approached him, he opened fire unexpectedly, striking two officers at close range. This sudden exchange of gunfire was described by Rochester Police Chief David Smith during a Saturday morning press conference.
In the chaos, the 911 caller was also shot multiple times during the confrontation. Authorities later confirmed that the caller was armed and had returned fire during the incident. Following the initial gunfire, the suspect fled the scene but was subsequently located several blocks away by another officer, who was also shot in the ensuing chaos. Officers at the scene responded to the threat by returning fire, resulting in the suspect being struck multiple times. He was later pronounced dead, though his identity remains unreleased pending notification of family.
Among the police officers injured in the confrontation, one sustained multiple wounds to the upper body and is currently listed in stable condition. Another officer was taken into surgery after being shot in the upper body and is reported to be in critical but stable condition. The third officer suffered serious injuries, but their condition has stabilized. The 911 caller is also reported to be in serious but non-life-threatening condition.
Authorities have not disclosed the names of the officers involved in the incident, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
