Suspect arrested in hit-and-run crash that resulted in pedestrian death in Manhattan crosswalk.
A suspect has been apprehended in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a pedestrian in a crosswalk on the Lower East Side. Law enforcement announced that the individual, Julio Cachago, 54, was taken into custody on Saturday after he attempted to report his vehicle, a 2010 Ford Edge, as stolen.
The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Stanton and Clinton Streets. Authorities have confirmed that the victim was legally crossing the street with the pedestrian signal in her favor when Cachago allegedly struck her. Following the collision, he left the scene without rendering assistance.
Cachago faces several serious charges, including criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and failure to yield to a pedestrian. According to prosecutors, Cachago was traveling north on Clinton Street when he executed a turn onto Stanton Street, where he reportedly hit the woman and continued driving.
Emergency medical personnel responded promptly to the scene and transported the unidentified woman to Bellevue Hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigators have been working diligently to establish her identity, as she was without identification at the time of her hospitalization.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the investigation, revealing the vehicle stopping approximately 35 minutes after the incident in the Financial District. The footage shows the driver exiting the SUV to inspect the front for damage before proceeding to the Bronx.
Later, law enforcement located the damaged Ford Edge parked in the Bronx. Following this discovery, Cachago attempted to report the vehicle as stolen. Officers eventually transported the SUV to the 7th Precinct stationhouse on the Lower East Side.
Cachago, a resident of the Astoria Houses in Queens, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court, where he was ordered held on a ,000 bond.
