A 46-year-old woman, Kelly L. Weber, has surrendered to authorities following accusations of driving a school bus under the influence in Montgomery County. Weber, a resident of Boyertown in Berks County, turned herself in to police after completing a rehabilitation program, as confirmed by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
Weber has been released on ,000 unsecured bail but faces stringent restrictions, including a prohibition on driving and unsupervised contact with children. A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office, Kate Delano, provided details on the conditions of her release.
The case against Weber is substantive, as she has been charged with 54 counts of endangering the welfare of children, 54 counts of reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, and additional related offenses. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 6, when Weber was operating the school bus in Douglass Township. Law enforcement was summoned after receiving reports of erratic driving behavior, during which the bus was alleged to have nearly collided with other vehicles and a telephone pole.
Upon stopping the bus, police discovered an open 750 ml bottle of Tito’s vodka, along with two empty bottles and a liquor store receipt timestamped at 9:22 a.m. that same day. At the time of the incident, 54 children were aboard the bus. Reports indicate that several children had reached out to their parents, expressing concerns regarding Weber’s driving capabilities. Notably, one child exited the bus at an earlier stop to be picked up by a parent, indicating a direct response to the unsettling situation.
Further compounding the charges against her, Weber voluntarily submitted to a blood test, revealing a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.331, which is over four times the legal limit for intoxication in Pennsylvania. Additionally, toxicology results indicated the presence of THC, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis.
