Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Sade, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, and Luther Vandross Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Sade, and Joy Division/New Order headline this year’s list of inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This announcement was made during a recent episode of “American Idol,” marking a significant recognition of some of music’s most iconic figures. The 2024 induction class also includes first-time nominees Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross, who left a lasting impact on the music industry before his passing in 2005.
Eligibility for induction requires that artists have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to their nomination. The selection process is rigorous, with over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals participating in the voting. Phil Collins, already a member of the Hall as part of Genesis, will now be honored for his successful solo career, which boasts eight Grammy Awards and notable hits such as “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night.” His induction comes on his first appearance on the ballot.
Soul and jazz powerhouse Sade, known for chart-topping classics like “Smooth Operator,” shares the limelight with the Wu-Tang Clan, a group renowned for revolutionizing hip-hop with their groundbreaking 1993 album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).”
Iron Maiden, nominated for the third time, played an integral role in the emergence of the new wave of British heavy metal, with seminal albums such as “The Number of the Beast” propelling their success. Luther Vandross, whose smooth vocal style earned him over 25 million album sales, remains an influential figure, having inspired contemporary artists including Kendrick Lamar.
Also making the cut are Manchester post-punk innovators Joy Division and New Order, whose shared lineage has significantly influenced alternative music, and Britpop sensation Oasis, comprised of the famed Gallagher brothers. Billy Idol continues to represent the punk-pop crossover with his unmistakable hits like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell.”
The induction ceremony will take place on November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with a televised special set to air in December on ABC and Disney+. Next year, the ceremony will return to Cleveland, the Hall’s home.
Several notable artists, including Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, and Melissa Etheridge, were nominated this year but will not be inducted. The Hall of Fame recognizes inductees not only in the performer category but also in three special categories: early influence, musical excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. This year’s early influence award will go to Queen Latifah, alongside figures like Cuban singer Celia Cruz and Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award will honor Ed Sullivan, a pivotal figure in promoting music icons through television.
This year’s class of 2024 is testament to the diverse landscape of music that has shaped global culture over the decades.
