Semifinalists for Orange County High School Artist of the Year 2026 Revealed

The Orange County Register has unveiled 108 semifinalists for its 2026 Artist of the Year program, highlighting a diverse array of talented young artists from across Orange County. This initiative, now in its thirteenth iteration, complements the newspaper’s esteemed Athlete of the Year awards by honoring exceptional achievements in multiple artistic disciplines, including theater, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, film and television, fine arts, and media arts.

This year’s selection process was notably competitive, drawing from a pool of 888 nominees. A panel of seasoned arts educators meticulously evaluated applications, performance videos, portfolios, film samples, and artistic résumés to curate the semifinalist list. The next phase of the competition will see these students engage in interviews with a distinguished panel of arts professionals and educators from various Southern California colleges. Each student will present their body of work live, offering insight into their artistic journeys and aspirations.

To foster inclusivity, the program divides participants into two categories based on their level of training. Division 1 accommodates artists with extensive formal training, whereas Division 2 is tailored for those with less experience. This dual structure ensures that emerging artists gain visibility and recognition alongside their more seasoned counterparts.

From the 108 semifinalists, three finalists in each artistic discipline will be chosen, with at least one representative from Division 2 among them. Ultimately, seven students—one in each discipline—will be bestowed with the esteemed title of 2026 Artist of the Year, marking the pinnacle of achievement in this prestigious program.

The finalists and the Artists of the Year will be announced during a live awards ceremony scheduled for May 13 at the Samueli Theatre, located on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus in Costa Mesa. The event, designed to celebrate these young visionaries, will include live performances and presentations. Admission is complimentary; however, attendees are required to make reservations in advance.

Support for the Artist of the Year program is generously provided by the Chapman University College of Performing Arts and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, with additional contributions from Arts Orange County and various individual patrons. Notably, the Pacific Symphony and Pacific Chorale, both resident companies of the Segerstrom Center, are recognized as sponsors in their respective musical categories, providing cash awards to the top-performing students. The dance award is dedicated in tribute to Judy Morr, while the Segerstrom Center sponsors the theater accolade.
