New contract awarded for construction of rail tunnel under the Hudson River.

The Gateway Development Commission recently awarded a significant contract for the boring of the under-river section of the Hudson River Tunnel, marking a key milestone in this ambitious infrastructure project. The contract, valued at .3 billion, has been entrusted to a joint venture consisting of renowned construction firms Traylor, Walsh, and Skanska. This venture is tasked with excavating the longest segment of the new rail tunnel, which will span from the New Jersey side of the Hudson River to 12th Avenue in Manhattan.

Tom Prendergast, CEO of the Gateway Development Commission, highlighted the progress made on the project, noting that more than fifty percent of the construction packages are either underway or completed. He emphasized the extensive planning and labor that have culminated in this achievement, stating that it has taken years and tens of thousands of hours of effort to reach this pivotal moment.

As part of their responsibilities, the joint venture will acquire two specialized tunnel boring machines specifically designed for excavating the twin 7,250-foot tubes beneath the river. These machines will differ significantly from those currently being constructed to navigate the abrasive rock of the New Jersey Palisades for the tunnel’s initial leg. Instead, these new machines will be optimized for the soft soil conditions of the Hudson’s riverbed, allowing for more efficient and effective excavation.

Gateway officials have indicated that preliminary work on the riverbed section of the tunnel is set to commence within the coming months. This development is pivotal not only for enhancing transportation infrastructure but also for supporting economic growth in the region, improving connectivity for millions of commuters.
