Woman arrested for assaulting 98-year-old Brooklyn man with broomstick during dispute over political flyers.
Police in New York City have taken into custody a 27-year-old woman, Tashara Abel, following an incident in which she allegedly assaulted a 98-year-old man. The confrontation, which occurred on Thursday afternoon in a building located at the intersection of Maple Street and Rogers Avenue in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, erupted over political flyers distributed by Abel in violation of the building’s established rules.
Abel was reportedly canvassing for the reelection campaign of New York State Committee Member Anthony Beckford, preparing for the upcoming Democratic primary scheduled for June 23. At approximately 4 p.m., she entered the building to distribute flyers, despite a sign prominently displayed on the front door stating a strict prohibition against flyers and posters.
The situation escalated dramatically when Abel began placing flyers in the mailboxes, leading to an argument with the building’s elderly owner. Law enforcement officials stated that the disagreement quickly turned physical, during which Abel allegedly struck the senior citizen multiple times, utilizing both a broomstick and a metal chair as weapons. Abel contended that she did not physically assault the man and claimed he initiated the confrontation by pushing her first.
Following the incident, police utilized doorbell camera footage obtained from the area to identify Abel, who resides approximately two miles from the location of the incident in Brownsville. On Friday, charges were formally brought against her, including multiple counts of assault, burglary, and weapons possession.
During her arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Saturday, Abel was released without bail. The elderly victim sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site by emergency personnel.
The victim’s wife shared her concerns, noting that he had become quite shaken from the altercation. Meanwhile, local residents described the 98-year-old as a beloved figure in their community, often found sweeping outside his building and assisting neighbors. His dedication to community safety had earned him a reputation as a caring and considerate neighbor.
The incident has raised broader concerns amid a troubling series of assaults targeting older individuals in New York City, prompting an ongoing investigation by the New York Police Department. In response to the attack, Anthony Beckford issued a statement expressing his commitment to understanding the full circumstances of the incident while emphasizing the importance of respect and professionalism among campaign volunteers. He expressed his intent to support the victim in any way possible.
As this situation develops, concerns about the safety of senior citizens in urban environments continue to be a focal point for both residents and law enforcement alike.
