Two people dead and suspect in custody following shooting incident at California library.

One individual is in custody following a tragic shooting incident at a library in Northern California that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left a third person injured late Monday afternoon.

Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge confirmed the first fatality shortly after 6:30 p.m. PT, followed by the notification of a second death approximately 20 minutes later. Meanwhile, a juvenile was transported to a local hospital with what were described as minor injuries. As of Tuesday evening, officials had not released the identities of the victims pending notification of their next of kin.

The police department reported that emergency calls began pouring in at 5:12 p.m. from individuals inside the Chico Library who reported hearing gunfire, accompanied by screams. Officers arrived on the scene by 5:18 p.m. and promptly entered the library to assess the situation.

Aldridge stated that the suspect attempted to escape through the back of the facility but was apprehended without any further confrontation occurring between law enforcement and the individual. Authorities have yet to disclose the motive behind the shooter’s actions, nor have details regarding the suspect’s identity or the firearm used in the crime been provided. It has been confirmed, however, that a single weapon was responsible for the fatalities.

A substantial contingent of emergency personnel, including officers from the Chico Police Department and other agencies such as Cal Fire and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene and worked collaboratively during the unfolding crisis. A Facebook post from the Chico Police indicated late Monday that there was no ongoing threat to the community.

In a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Aldridge expressed that the incident marked a deeply sad moment for the local community. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has offered its assistance, and both the Butte County District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriffs’ office will play integral roles in the investigation.

Located approximately 85 miles northwest of Sacramento, Chico is now grappling with the impact of this harrowing event.
