Hollywood director Carl Rinsch was sentenced to two and a half years in prison following his conviction for defrauding Netflix of million intended for a science fiction series titled “White Horse.” The sentencing occurred in a New York courtroom, where supporters, including actor Keanu Reeves, sought leniency for Rinsch, who is best known for the 2013 film “47 Ronin.”

Rinsch’s conviction, which included charges of federal wire fraud, stemmed from a scheme that saw him misappropriate funds allocated by Netflix. Prosecutors asserted that he initially received approximately million for “White Horse” during 2018 and 2019, before requesting an additional million in 2020. Contrary to the intent of these funds, Rinsch diverted the money into his personal account rather than directing it toward the completion of the project. Following this diversion, he reportedly spent extraordinary amounts on luxury items, including 2,000 on watches, five Rolls-Royce vehicles, and an astonishing 8,000 on two high-end mattresses.

During the court proceedings, Rinsch’s legal team highlighted ongoing mental health challenges that allegedly contributed to his actions. Rinsch expressed remorse, stating that the experience had compelled him to confront his health and judgment issues. He admitted to having caused significant harm and acknowledged the inappropriateness of his decisions. Despite these claims, prosecutors contended that Rinsch’s background—characterized by family wealth, prominent connections, and a successful career—afforded him many privileges, indicating that his motivations were largely driven by greed.

Prosecutors proposed a five-year sentence, arguing that Rinsch’s actions were particularly egregious, given his advantages. U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff acknowledged Rinsch’s mental health issues but stated that these factors did not absolve him of liability or the deceptive nature of his actions toward Netflix.

Rinsch, who is scheduled to report to prison in September, has indicated plans to appeal the ruling. Netflix has refrained from commenting on the case or the resulting sentence. Following the proceedings, many supporters gathered around Rinsch, offering encouragement, as legal representatives remained hopeful about advancing an appeal. This high-profile case underscores significant issues surrounding financial misconduct and ethical responsibility within the entertainment industry.
