A Temple University student has been placed on interim suspension following an incident of antisemitism that occurred at a Barstool Sports bar located in Center City Philadelphia. The incident involved a group of patrons ordering a light-up bottle service sign that displayed an antisemitic message. The video capturing this act circulated widely on social media, culminating in significant backlash, including a vociferous response from Barstool CEO Dave Portnoy, who expressed his outrage over the display of hate.
In a public statement, Temple University President John Fry condemned the actions unequivocally, stating that antisemitism and any form of hatred are unacceptable within the university community. Fry emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering an environment free from discrimination, underscoring that such behavior is not tolerated at Temple.
Portnoy, who is Jewish, described a notable increase in antisemitism during the past year and a half, asserting that he has encountered more hatred than in his two decades of involvement with Barstool. He characterized the individuals responsible for the incident as “young morons” who were intoxicated at the time. Portnoy suggested that this unfortunate event could serve as a “teachable moment,” proposing that the students be sent to Auschwitz, the notorious concentration camp where millions of Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. This proposal, aiming to educate those involved on the severity and implications of their actions, highlights an effort to transform a negative incident into a learning experience.
In addition to the student’s suspension, two waitstaff members connected with the incident were terminated immediately.
