Former Acting U.S. Attorney Passes Away in San Diego Federal Building

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden, who held the position of acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California on two occasions, passed away late Wednesday within the federal building that accommodates the U.S. Attorney’s Office in downtown San Diego. Authorities confirmed the news on Thursday, adding that Haden, a 48-year-old father of two and U.S. Navy veteran, was discovered in a vacant office after being reported missing earlier the same day. Preliminary reports indicate that his death may have been a suicide, although police stated that they do not suspect any foul play.

Haden had a distinguished career, dedicating 16 years to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and rising to significant leadership roles, including serving as deputy under U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman in 2022. Upon Grossman’s departure in August 2023, Haden assumed responsibilities as acting U.S. attorney for a brief period until the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s nominee, Tara McGrath. Haden again stepped in as acting U.S. attorney for another two months during a transition period after McGrath’s dismissal in early 2025, until Adam Gordon took over the role.

A San Diego native, Haden was an alumnus of University City High School, Stanford University, and the University of San Diego, where he earned his law degree. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer Award from the San Diego chapter of the Federal Bar Association in 2024, a recognition that is particularly poignant given his supportive role toward the family of a former colleague who passed away from cancer.
