Man dies in NYPD custody after being hospitalized for withdrawal symptoms, according to police reports.
A 54-year-old man died while in police custody in Brooklyn after experiencing apparent withdrawal symptoms, raising questions about the medical care provided during his detention. Reginald Newkirk was arrested on drug-related charges on Friday evening when members of the NYPD observed him holding a crack pipe outside an apartment building located on Rockaway Parkway, near Rutland Road in East Flatbush, around 8:53 PM.
Following his arrest, Newkirk was taken to Downstate Medical Center after falling ill approximately 10 hours later, around 6:45 AM on Saturday. According to police reports, he was evaluated and subsequently cleared for discharge about four hours later. Newkirk was then returned to the 67th Precinct.
However, his condition deteriorated later that day. Police stated that around 2:05 PM, he began displaying symptoms consistent with drug withdrawal, prompting a second hospitalization. This time, he was transferred to Kings County Hospital, where he tragically passed away at approximately 5:00 AM on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding Newkirk’s death have sparked concern and scrutiny regarding the handling of his medical needs while in custody.
A spokesperson for the city’s Medical Examiner confirmed that an official determination regarding the cause of death remains pending further examination. This incident highlights ongoing issues related to the treatment of individuals facing addiction and the procedures in place for managing health crises within the criminal justice system.
Residents reflected on the challenges posed by drug addiction in the community, underscoring the need for more comprehensive resources and support systems for individuals struggling with substance use. Newkirk was a resident of Ozone Park in Queens, emphasizing the incident’s impact on local neighborhoods.
As this case unfolds, it will likely bring renewed conversation about public health policies, law enforcement protocols, and the critical intersection of addiction and incarceration. The community watches closely as further investigations promise to shed light on the factors leading to Newkirk’s untimely death. The evolving discussions could pave the way for important reforms that prioritize health care and humane treatment for individuals in police custody.
